SPOKEN WORD: Taco Shop Poets
"Chorizo Tonguefire," (Calaca Press)
*** [3 stars out of 4]

Embracing a low-fi, free stylin' aesthetic, homegrown poets Adolfo Guzman Lopez and compatriots Miguel-Angel Soria, [Adrian Arancibia] and Tomas Riley give out buoyant shout-outs to their collective love for language. Starting with the Taco Shop Poets' off-the-wall manifesto, the album launches into a bilingual combo of smart, surreal observations on O.J. Simpson ("O.J. O.J. O.J."), inequity between the haves-and-the-have-nots ("Nooks"), and barrio life ("July 4th in the Barrio").

The Taco Shop Poets will give a free performance 7 p.m. Saturday [12/9/99] at the Culy Trucking Warehouse downtown [San Diego, 338 7th Ave].
