For those who have been
waiting, Raza Spoken Here is here. Reminiscent of Gil Scott Herron,
it is also a 1999 version of 1960s & 1970s Flor y Canto.
This is Calaca Press's first
venture into Spoken Word/poesia. Last year, it published it's
first book, Manuel J. Velez's "Bus Stop."
Raza Spoken here features
Chicano and Chicana poets from San Diego, Los Angeles and the
San Francisco Bay area, including great Chicano poetry from:
The Taco Shop Poets, Olga Angelina García Echeverria,
Manuel J. Vélez, The Rasquachi Performers, Elba Rosario
Sánchez, Daniel Sánchez-Glazer, Sandra C. Muñoz,
Christian Ramírez, Chuy Quintero,Trago Amargo.
The sounds are street, they're
urban and hip. If you remember the words of Ricardo Sanchez,
they're also angry. Speaking of which, someone would do Sanchez
right to put his words into a CD. Powerful stuff. Similarly,
the work here is powerful, political, funny, loco... and spiritual.
Seems like a new generation
has replaced Sanchez, Tigre, Jose Antonio Burciaga and Jose Montalvo,
the Black Hat Poet -- all of whom recently left us. The poetry
here will not disappoint. Especially powerful and fresh are the
young women.
