San Diego City College World
Cultures Program presents the Red CalacArts Collective’Äôs 7th Annual
International Women’Äôs Day Celebration: Pistolas y Rebozos. This female infused
cultural happening will take place on Friday, March 9, 2007 with performances
starting at 6:00pm at the Saville Theater on the San Diego City College campus
(14th & C St. Downtown). At 4:30pm the film, Testimony: The Maria Guardado
Story, will precede the performances.
Founded seven years ago by Calaca
Press and taken on in 2004 by their project, the Red CalacArts Collective, these
International Women’Äôs Day Celebrations have become an artistic symbol of
strength for women performers in San Diego. Past celebrations included music,
poetry, teatro, speeches, dance and more, all affirming the power, intelligence
and beauty of female artists. This year’Äôs event, entitled Pistolas y Rebozos,
is co-organized with City College’Äôs World Cultures Program and will continue
with more of the same outstanding sisterhood empowering performances.
Headlining this year is the New
York City based rockin’Äô ranchera group, PISTOLERA, fronted by San Diego native
Sandra Velasquez. The Union-Tribune’Äôs ENLACE says: ’ÄúPistolera es fuerte.
Pistolera es peligrosa. Pistolera es roquerota y rancherota a la vez.’Äù Check
out Pistolera as they return to San Diego with their pistolas blazin’Äô away.
In addition, we have the soulful
R&B voice of up-and-coming local Latina singing sensation PEARL whose CD, Can
You Feel It,
integrates the soulful vocal stylings of a strong woman on the rise mixed with
an urban hip hop aesthetic.
Giving out word and wisdom with
poetry and performance are East LA’Äôs code-switching literary phenom OLGA A.
GARCIA ECHEVERRIA, whose book Falling Angels: Cuentos y Poemas is forthcoming from Calaca
Press, City College professor and teatrista extraordinaire MARIA FIGUEROA, and
rebellious Red CalacArtivista SARA R. ESLAVA.
In addition there will be
paintings displayed by National City artista YOLANDA LOPEZ and female vendors
selling their various wares.
And to kick it all off at 4:30pm
is Testimony: The Maria Guardado Story, a film by Randy Vasquez, which highlights the
life of Salvadoran political refugee Maria Guardado who returns to her homeland
and reminisces about repression, death squads, Archbishop Oscar Romero and her
continuing work as a human rights activist in Los Angeles. 64 min.
Music, poetry, art, film, and
more!
This event is free, open to the
public (including men!), and handicap accessible.
