What is Calaca Press?
Calaca Press is a
progressive Chican@ literary publishing house run by husband and
wife team Brent E. Beltrán and Consuelo Manríquez
de Beltrán out of their garage in National City, Califas.
Is Calaca a nonprofit?
No, Calaca does not
have nonprofit status. Calaca is technically a business but the
owners receive no salary or profits from it. All money received
through sales goes back into producing the next title.
What type of work
does Calaca publish?
Calaca is a literary
press that publishes bilingual literature by Chican@ Latin@ writers
or works that relate to the Chican@ Latin@ community. Calaca mainly
publishes authors of poetry, spoken word, or fiction whose work
deals with issues of social justice and human rights.

How can I submit
my work to Calaca?
Calaca does not accept
unsolicited manuscripts. The only time we accept submissions is
when we make a call for either audio submissions, like the Raza
Spoken Here CD series (which will be produced every couple years),
or for our literary journal, the Calaca Review (which will be
published sporadically).
What is the CalacaList?
The CalacaList is
Calaca's email listserv. Calaca sends out announcements regarding
upcoming releases, Calaca and non-Calaca publishing opportunities,
reviews of Calaca titles, Calaca related events as well as other
Chican@ Latin@ related arts and activist events. Calaca sends
out between 1-7 emails per month via the CalacaList.
Who are some of the
writers/artists Calaca has published/produced?
As of June 2004 Calaca
Press/Red CalacArt Publications has published/produced 21 titles
featuring 64 different poets, authors, artists, and groups including
but not limited to:
Chicano poetry legends raúlrsalinas
and alurista; MacArthur "Genius" Award recipient Guillermo
Gómez-Peña; Colombian lesbian librarian tatiana
de la tierra; La Revista Mujer cofounder and editor Elba Rosario
Sánchez; artist and author Simón Silva; spoken word
groups the Taco Shop Poets, Los Delicados and Grito Serpentino;
up-and-coming Latina scribes Olga Angelina García Echeverría
and Leticia Hernández-Linares; and Latina artists Berenice
Badillo, Isis Rodriguez and Maya
Gonzalez as well Chicano Park muralists Victor
Ochoa, Mario Torero,
and Sal Barajas to name a few.

A Calaquer@ is any
author or artist who has been published, produced or who has worked
with Calaca Press.
How can I get a Calaquer@
to perform/read at my event?
To get a Calaquer@
to perform at your event email Calaca Press and we will put you
in contact. Keep in mind that all of our Calaquer@s are like most
artists: broke. Honorariums are expected and if event is out of
their respective towns traveling expenses and accommodations will
be required.
How often does Calaca
publish?
Calaca Press has published
between one and six titles per year. Averaging about 2 titles
per year. We would like to publish/produce up to 6 titles every
year but our finances do not allow for that.
Does Calaca provide
a discount to retailers, non-profits, and community groups?
Yes, Calaca does provide
a discount to retailers, non-profits, and community groups. Our
discount is 40% off the cover for retailers (purchase orders are
accepted) and 40% off the cover for non-profits and community
groups who purchase ten units or more.
